At last Saturday's "Dinner in the Dark" event at the Camarillo Community Center, Lion Greg Steinmetz asked the 174 guests to imagine what it would be like to be blind for an evening — or for a week, a month, or a lifetime, the Ventura County Star reports.
"Think about what it might be like to completely live with vision loss or blindness," said Steinmetz.
Steinmetz, is blind because of Retinitis Pigmentosa, an inherited, degenerative eye disease.
In 2004, the club sponsored his first guide dog from Guide Dogs of America. Steinmetz said he wanted to give back to the guide dogs organization, which has its headquarters in Sylmar. It is funded only through donations and doesn't charge recipients.
