Born with a rare disorder called Microphthalmia, Hoby Wedler has been blind since birth.
Now 27 and a Ph.D. student in computational organic chemistry at UC Davis, Wedler leads the monthly “Tasting in the Dark” series at the Francis Ford Coppola Winery in Geyserville, the Sacramento Bee reports. Participants are blindfolded and learn to assess wine the same way Wedler does.
But another experience at the school led him to his future career: a viticulture and oenology class.
