At the age of 13, Wanner began racing micro sprints at an eighth-mile dirt track in Pennsylvania, the Reading Eagle reports. His passion for racing came from his dad, who also raced and took his family to watch sprint cars at local tracks.
His parents eventually bought him a micro sprint car and he began his career. Now his sister, Marilyn, who is also deaf, owns the car he races. His three-man pit crew, including his father, are all deaf.
In 2012, Wanner was named American Racing Drivers Club (ARDC) Rookie of the Year.
