Gavin Reid was bemused to be named Britain's yachtsman of the year after competing in only one race, CNN reports.
Reid, who is profoundly deaf and sails with special waterproof hearing aids, was up against Olympic medalists and longtime sailors.
The award was given to him for his part in a dramatic ocean rescue last year. In extremely heavy seas, Reid swam to a stranded vessel to climb its mast and untangle a distressed crew member. The rescue took two hours, and in the process, his yacht fell back to last place in the round-the-world race.
