A Vietnam veteran has been sentenced for claiming false disability to the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Miami Herald reports.
Court documents show that 71-year-old Doyle Mullins claimed he was “totally and permanently blind" for more than 20 years, and that during that time the VA paid him more than a half million dollars.
The payments, in the thousands of dollars per month, included medical benefits for his wife and grants for a car and adaptive housing.
Investigators said they began surveillance of Mullins, and saw him engage in activities such as driving, running errands and mowing his lawn.
