Tom Vanderpool first went to Bimini as a tourist. He loved the island, but unlike most tourists, he also paid attention to the living conditions of the local people.
“I saw that there wasn’t any health care available on the island at all — no clinic, no doctor, just a nurse who would visit every so often,” he told Tulsa World.
Vanderpool, an optometrist, went home and gathered the funds and equipment to make his first trip back to this island in the Bahamas. It took him seven years. Now he returns with his family every year to conduct eye exams and provide glasses to all who need them.
