Melody and Russ Stein met at Gallaudet University, a university for the deaf, while studying business.
Six years ago the pair opened Mozzeria, KGO TV reports.
"We had a really long journey to get here. We honestly didn't think we would actually pass a year, and now we have been open six years and it's been pretty amazing to see how successful it has been over the past six years," Russ told KGO.
Now a social venture fund grant from the non-profit Communication Service For The Deaf, or CSD, will allow the restaurant to have franchises all over the U.S.
The unemployment rate for deaf people is 70 percent, Melody points out, and even for those with college degrees, it's tough to find a job.
