Researchers are developing a device that can compensate for the loss of eyesight for people suffering from advanced stages of macular degeneration or glaucoma, KCRA News reports.
Or-Cam is a miniature smart camera that attaches to conventional eyeglasses. can photograph words and then read them to the blind.
"The Or-Cam, which is a character-recognition device, gives the person the ability to read computer screens and books, recognize faces, recognize currency all in a very normal way," Mark Mannis, chair of the UC Davis Department of Ophthalmology and Vision Science, told KCRA.
Prices for the device can range from $2,500 to $3,000.
