It was Friday night on “The Tonight Show,” and Jimmy Fallon's guest was actor Jamie Foxx.
In the run-up to a commercial break, Foxx “interpreted” host Jimmy Fallon with made-up sign language. He got a laugh, but the Deaf community was not amused, among them actor and model Nyle DiMarco, who is deaf, the Kansas City Star reports.
DiMarco became the first deaf winner of “America’s Next Top Model” in 2015; last year he won season 22 of “Dancing With the Stars.”
DiMarco took to Twitter to call Foxx out, tweeting: "@iamjamiefoxx, It is straight up disrespectful to make up sign language. Everything is in gibberish."
And Marlee Matlin, the only deaf actor to win an Oscar, tweeted: "Mr. @iamjamiefoxx, I'd be happy to give you sign language lessons so you could be funnier."
