Once a celebrated show horse, he was born deaf. When he retired, he was donated to the Houston Police Department, since his calm temperament made him ideally suited for police work, KENS5 News reports.
Then Katherine Richards, 26, who was born with an intellectual disability, discovered Smash on a visit to the Houston Police Mounted Division stables. She asked why he didn’t have a sponsor sign.
The HPD allows citizens and corporations to sponsor individual horses, at $5,000 a year, personally taking part in and helping fund their care. Now Richards is one of a group of five young women, all with intellectual disabilities, who sponsor Smash.
