Caroline Solomon teaches biology at Gallaudet University, the renowned school for deaf and hard-of-hearing students.
She has won 13 gold medals in swimming in the Deaflympics, but it was a polluted creek in Caroline Solomon's childhood backyard that formed her passion for science. Along with it came another challenge: "How can I influence other deaf and hard-of-hearing students?"
As an undergraduate at Harvard, then as a graduate student at the University of Washington and University of Maryland, she was usually the only deaf person in class, National Public Radio reports.
