Mireya and Valerie Phlaum were born deaf.
Now, USA Today reports, both are reserves for the Shadow Hills (Indio, CA) girls’ basketball team. Mireya, is a senior backup point guard, and Valerie is a sophomore reserve forward.
At first the girls and their coach, Thaddis Bosley, had big problems with communication. They tried various work-arounds, but nothing worked very well.
This year Bosley asked them to come up with hand signals. So the sisters, in short time, authored a series of signals for the entire Knights’ team. Now they all use them.
