Gashaw Duhamel started running just for fun.
The 19-year-old athlete, born in Ethiopia, is the first athlete from the Tennessee School for the Deaf to earn a Division I scholarship, USA Today reports.
Duhamel signed with the University of Tennessee in May. Adopted by a couple in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, just before starting high school, he entered a local 5K on a whim and finished fourth out of the hundreds of entrants.
