Gallaudet University rising senior Faye Frez-Albrecht is deaf and legally blind.
For the past two years, USA Today reports, Faye and her coach have fought to remove the disadvantages that deaf and hard of hearing athletes face in swim meets.
LED tube lights have been tested repeatedly in the pool at Gallaudet, and now the NCAA has approved them for use in the 2017-18 academic year.
The technology will be a big help, and not only to deaf swimmers. Since light travels faster than sound, its use helps all swimmers improve their start times. The system may well change the face of competitive swimming.
