Marshall Greene is not fluent in American Sign Language, but that didn't stop him from attempting to translate two news conferences about Hurricane Irma on September 8, Salon.com reports.
Greene is a Florida lifeguard who has a deaf brother, and to be fair, he apparently was just trying to help out in a pinch.
Manatee County usually engages a professional translating service, but didn't contact them before the news conferences. Maybe county officials were trying to save money.
Now Greene is a YouTube sensation, with various videos posted along with hilarious translations. But it wasn't funny to hearing-impaired residents who were depending on county officials for life-saving information.
“It really scared me,” one resident said. “We’re in an emergency situation here. It was a life and death thing.”
