Dan McKernan runs an animal rescue in Michigan, and last October he took in a calf named Mike, the Detroit Free Press reports.
Then it turned out Mike had cataracts.
But Dan couldn't find With no animal ophthalmologist in the area, he called around the country to find a veterinarian who could perform the surgery. And the only person he could find was Allison Hoffman, who happened to be in Pasadena.
So in early January, the two friends set out on their journey.
Dr. Hoffman performed the operation, but with only a 25 percent chance of success, the surgery ultimately failed.
Dan made the best of it. He took Mike to Malibu to feel and smell the ocean. Now he's back home with a seeing-eye buddy to keep him out of trouble.
