In the third grade, Neil entered the school spelling bee just for fun, the Washington Post reports. He won the competition for his grade, and then for his school in Belton, South Carolina. He came in second in the regionals.
For Neil, the word reader at the national competition will use an FM system that sends the word to a receiver located on the back of Neil’s head, which in turn will transmit it to his cochlear implant.
