On the centenary of the Great War, deaf filmmaker Julian Peedle-Calloo has produced a new 30-minute drama, "Battle Lines," the BBC reports. Made for the deaf online TV channel BSLZone, it's set in a small village during the war and chronicles the struggles of a deaf man who wants to fight for his country but is scorned by his community.
"'Many people are under the impression that deaf men were fortunate to not serve in World War One due to their deafness and so had a lucky escape,' Peedle-Calloo says. "I wanted to show that they were far from lucky.'"
