Colin Cook's aunt lost her vision to diabetes -- and eventually her life, CBS News reports.
A Caltech graduate student, Colin is now on a mission to help diabetics preserve their eyesight.
He has designed special glowing contact lenses to treat diabetic retinopathy. “The small blood vessels begin to die off as a result of the diabetes and so the retina starts to starve from lack of oxygen,” Colin explains.
They trick the eye into thinking it's daytime, so the cells won't consume as much oxygen, he says.
