U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is issuing warnings this week about contact lenses being sold over the counter that make you look seriously creepy -- but are also illegal and in some cases can cause blindness.
Acting with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in an effort dubbed Operation Double Vision, authorities have already seized around 100,000 illegal lenses.
Testing of these lenses has revealed high levels of bacteria, the result of poor sanitary conditions during packaging and improper storage during the shipping process. "Additionally," ICE warns, "the coloring on decorative contact lenses may be made of lead-based materials that leach directly into the eye."
Talk about scary.
If you really feel the need to dress up your eyeballs, it's going to cost you. Get a prescription.
