When writer and actress Rachel Shenton accepted the Oscar for best live-action short film, she fulfilled a promise made to its young star, Maisie Sly, delivering her speech in British Sign Language.
The film depicts the struggles of a profoundly deaf child, and was inspired by Shenton's father, who last his hearing when she was a child.
Shenton and her fiance, Chris Overton, also thanked their parents, who baked and sold cupcakes to finance the film.
The young star “held the Oscar, she said it was very heavy, she had her photograph taken with it and then said she wanted to go back and see her brothers and sisters, so she’s keeping it real,” Shenton told The Guardian.
